Sir Peter Rigby
Computers, Aviation, Hotels
Midlands-based Rigby Group has a turnover of £1.8bn, 7,500 staff and £280m assets. The man who founded it 42 years ago had initially only ever wanted to fly for the RAF, but after his father lost his sight he felt it was inappropriate to take up an air force scholarship and instead went into business. Rigby, 73, launched his Specialist Computer operation in the mid-1970s with £2,000 savings. The group also owns the Eden Hotel Collection and operates regional airports at Coventry, Norwich and Exeter. Profits at the Rigby Group rose to £22.3m in 2015-16 and his family stake is worth £550m. Past dividends, salaries and other interests add at least £50m.
