The Duke of Sutherland
Art, Land
Rank 2017

The 7th duke resides at the 18th-century Mertoun House in the Scottish Borders where his impressive Bridgewater Collection, including paintings by Poussin, Raphael, Rembrandt, Rubens, Tintoretto and Titian, is valued at as much as £1bn. He sold two Titians to the nation for £95m, but we reckon if Sutherland, 77, wanted to part with the remaining artworks he would only realise £450m now. Adding £35m for land holdings and £95m from art sales keeps him at £580m.
