Turning 82 next month and hard at work before many of us are awake, Hemmings is not looking to retire. “I was up at 5am this morning and in my office by 6.30am," he said. "I’m still chairman and I’m not really winding down at all. My business interests are looked after, but I’m in touch with them daily.” The Isle of Man resident’s plant hire-to-pubs empire has a turnover of £400m, with his two main firms – Chorley-based Northern Trust, and Trust Inns, which has 420 pubs – showing £278m net assets in 2015-16. He also owns Championship football club Preston North End and is a keen follower of the turf. He has had three Grand National winners and he recently bought last year's Scottish National winner Vicente.
