Henry Engelhardt and family
A stunned Engelhardt, 59, arrived for his final day at Admiral in Cardiff last May to find staff cheering the insurer’s co-founder and chief executive while wearing T-shirts with 22 of his business soundbites on the back. These “Henry-isms" included: “The perfect is the enemy of the good." Chicago-born Engelhardt started the company in 1993 with David Stevens (qv) and in the first half of 2016 it produced record profits of £193m, but its shares suffered their worst fall in five years after Brexit. They have since recovered and Admiral is now valued at £5.2bn, with Engelhardt retaining a £578m stake.
