Rank 2017

"Money allows me to make a difference to someone's life and that is a joy – the ultimate joy," said Syrian-born Asfari, 58, who led the £742m float of London-based oil services group Petrofac in 2005 and retains an 18.2% stake in the business. With the oil industry still becalmed, his holding is worth £521m and other assets take him to £621m. His charitable foundation, set up with his wife Sawsan, supports education projects for young Britons, Syrians, Palestinians and Lebanese.
