Wimbledon resident Coombs, 57, and Jerome Booth (qv) led a 1999 management takeover of Ashmore, which is now worth more than £2bn. Cambridge-educated Coombs sold £192m worth of shares when the City investment group floated in 2006 and retains a holding worth £812m. He picked up a £709,000 bonus in 2016 but his real earnings stem from the £335m in dividends he has received since 2007, including more than £46m in the past year. After tax on the payments he is worth at least £1.156bn. Coombs was among the leading backers of the "remain" side in the EU referendum with a £750,000 donation.
