Born in Baghdad, Auchi, 79, fled Iraq after an encounter with an enforcer working for Saddam Hussein's feared half-brother Barzan Ibrahim al-Tikriti. Since moving to the UK he has turned his Luxembourg-based General Mediterranean Holding into a multinational conglomerate with a $4bn turnover spanning hotels, finance, telecoms, construction and pharmaceuticals. Last year the Surrey resident was stripped of his knighthood awarded by the former British colony of Antigua and Barbuda after discussions involving then prime minister David Cameron.
