Twins David and Frederick, 82, are understood to be considering offloading a substantial stake in their £2bn Shop Direct operation, which includes the brands Littlewoods and very.co.uk. It saw profits grow sharply in 2015-16 to £105.6m.
The twins have a castle on Brecqhou in the Channel Islands. They bought the 80-acre island for about £3.5m in 1993 and spent millions landscaping it and building the home, but spend much of their time in Monaco where their luxury yacht Lady Beatrice is moored.
They own the Ritz and other choice sites around the UK worth £1.8bn. They also own the Telegraph newspapers, which made £48.1m profit in 2015-16, although their Yodel delivery operation lost £59.3m.
Two years ago the siblings sold their controlling stake in the Maybourne Group of luxury hotels to Qatari purchasers for more than £2.4bn. Their charitable foundation has an annual income of almost £18m following decades of huge donations. Recent beneficiaries include Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and Black Stork, which helps rehabilitate injured servicemen.
