The Oppenheimer Blue diamond was sold for a record auction price of £40m last May. Educated at Harrow and Oxford, Oppenheimer is the grandson of Ernest Oppenheimer, who founded the Anglo American mining giant in 1917 and later took over the De Beers diamond operation. Oppenheimer, 71, spends much of his time in South Africa but also has an estate near Maidenhead. In 2012 he sold his 40% stake in De Beers for $5.1bn, with previous share sales netting £300m. After hefty charitable donations his family is worth £5.534bn.
