It's been a tough 12 months for Ashley, 52, with the media exposing less than savoury working conditions at his Sports Direct warehouses. His Nottinghamshire-based operation is now worth £1.73bn against nearly £4.5bn a year ago and his stake is valued at just £980m – down £270m. Ashley, from Buckinghamshire, is attempting to become the “Selfridges of sports” by selling off several brands to concentrate on top names such as Nike and Adidas. He owns Newcastle United football club, who were promoted to the Premier League last month.
